Stonefish, (Synanceia), a group of venomous marine fish found in shallow waters of the tropical Indo-Pacific.
Stonefish are sluggish bottom-dwellers that live among rocks or coral and in mudflats and estuaries. Stonefish have large heads and mouths, small eyes, bumpy skins covered with wartlike lumps and, sometimes, fleshy flaps. These dangerous fish rest on the seafloor, unmoving, blending almost exactly with their surroundings in form and colour, very difficult to see. When stepped on, they inject quantities of venom through their dorsal fin spines. Wounds caused by these fish are intensely painful and sometimes fatal.
